The Asuadera was Japan’s first full-scale Buddhist temple. Its construction was started in 588 (first year of Emperor Sushun’s reign), marking an important epoch in political, cultural and technological history of this country.
More than half a century ago, the first members of Nara National Research Institute for Cultural Properties carried out archaeological excavations in the ancient premise of this temple. In 1986 Asuka Historical Museum held a special exhibition about the Asukadera to show the rich results of those excavations. The research concerning the Asukadera has been continued after the exhibition, and we have accumulated enough knowledge to organize another exhibition titled ‘ ASUKADERA 2013’. Along with new information we would like to exhibit drawings and photographs of the first 1956~1957 excavations.
We are very happy if the exhibition can provide an opportunity to the public to contemplate the significance of the first Buddhist temple and the character of the Asuka region in which it was founded.
