KURIHARADERA

Asuka-mura, Hirata (Kurihara)

Judged from the tile designs, this temple appears to have been founded in the early 8th century. Foundation stones remain. It is thought by some that in the Kurihara region there lived descendents of immigrants who came in the mid-5th century from "Kure-no-kuni" (possibly the state of Wu in east-central China, or possibly Korea). It was in this region that the cremation of the priest Dosho was performed.
