DAIGO-HAIJI

Site of Daigo-haiji, seen from a distance
Kashihara-shi, Daigo-cho

In the outskirts of the Daigo district is an earth platform, in the vicinity of which have been dis-covered foundation stones and tiles from the latter half of the 7th century, with the result that it is thought to be a temple site. One theory links it to the "Daigoji" (Written with different characters having the same pronunciation) mentioned in historical literature as having been built by Shotoku Taishi. Certain tiles resemble tiles from the Horyuji, a finding which is unusual with respect to architectural remains in the Asuka region.
